For nearly three decades, Somnath Ghimire has stood as a prominent figure in New York’s South Asian and Nepali American communities—combining grassroots activism, political engagement, and global human rights advocacy into a life dedicated to public service.

A resident of Woodside since 1996, Ghimire has witnessed and contributed to the transformation of Queens into one of the most diverse and dynamic cultural hubs in the United States. Over the years, he has not only built deep roots within the local community but has also emerged as a trusted leader and organizer, particularly among immigrant populations seeking representation, support, and opportunity.

A Strong Presence in Democratic Politics

Ghimire’s involvement in Democratic politics spans more than two decades. His active participation in political campaigns and civic engagement efforts has helped strengthen the voice of South Asian Americans in New York’s political landscape.

Known for his ability to mobilize communities, he has played a key role in connecting grassroots concerns with policy-level discussions.

His leadership style is rooted in inclusivity and representation—ensuring that diverse communities, especially immigrants, are not only heard but actively involved in shaping their future.

Leadership Across Community Organizations

Beyond politics, Somnath Ghimire has held several influential leadership roles that reflect his commitment to social development and community empowerment. He currently serves as:

  • President of the Girija Prasad Koirala Foundation America, promoting democratic values and social welfare initiatives inspired by the legacy of Nepal’s former prime minister.
  • President of the Jackson Heights Chapter of the Alliance of South Asian American Labor (ASAAL), where he advocates for labor rights and the welfare of working-class South Asian immigrants.
  • State Director in New York for SAFA, further strengthening community networks and organizational impact.

Through these roles, Ghimire has consistently worked to uplift marginalized voices, promote social justice, and foster unity across diverse communities.

Global Human Rights Advocate

Ghimire’s influence extends far beyond local community work. As the Global Program Manager of the International Institute for Human Rights, Environment and Development (INHURED INTERNATIONAL), he has been actively involved in international advocacy.

His dedication to human rights has taken him to 22 countries, where he has participated in missions focused on justice, environmental sustainability, and human dignity. This global exposure has enriched his perspective, allowing him to bring international insights into local community initiatives.

A Multilingual Connector

One of Ghimire’s greatest strengths is his ability to communicate across cultures. Fluent in multiple languages—including Hindi, Nepali, Bengali, Assamese, Urdu, Garo, and Punjabi—he has the rare ability to engage with a wide range of communities on a personal and meaningful level.

In a city as diverse as New York, this linguistic versatility is not just an advantage—it is a powerful tool for building trust, fostering inclusion, and mobilizing collective action.

Somnath Ghimire’s journey reflects a deep commitment to service, leadership, and advocacy. Whether working at the grassroots level in Queens or engaging in global human rights initiatives, his mission remains consistent: to empower communities, amplify voices, and create opportunities for meaningful participation.
