A website is an essential component for any business, service, or product. It helps us integrate into a technology-driven society and supports the growth and promotion of our business, services, and products through digital platforms.

Today, educational institutions, business organizations, hotels, restaurants, cafés, party palaces, manufacturers, service providers, and social organizations all have access to websites. In the past, website development was not easily accessible to everyone, so only limited institutions had websites. However, nowadays, almost every organization has its own website.

If we look at the market condition of the website development industry, the cost of building a website is not fixed. Since it is a service-based work, the cost varies depending on the developer or company, coding quality, website layout, network speed, search engine optimization, and hundreds of internet protocols, add-ons, features, APIs, and plugins used. Therefore, different development approaches result in different pricing structures.

Below are some important factors that cause price differences in website development:

Web Hosting

After a website is developed, it must be hosted on a server that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. This is known as web hosting. The cost of hosting depends on the type of server, network speed, security, storage type, uptime, backup and restore systems, and other features.

If more files need to be stored, more hosting space is required, which increases the cost. Static websites are generally built within 100 MB, 250 MB, or 500 MB. Email space may range from 200 MB to 500 MB, and a static site can often be hosted within 1000 MB. Dynamic websites may require 500 MB, 2500 MB, 5000 MB, or even 10000 MB, depending on the number of photos, files, and content.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is typically about ten times the hosting space in shared hosting. It refers to the process of downloading or uploading files between the server and the client’s browser. Bandwidth resets on the first day of every month.

For example, if a website has 100 MB of space, it may have 1000 MB of bandwidth. If a 5 MB file is downloaded 200 times, the bandwidth limit will be exceeded, and the website may display a 509 error.

Development Cost

Building a well-structured website requires many hours of work. The cost depends on the content, number of pages, scripts, and type of website. A team may spend hundreds of hours developing a website. Decisions about layout, browser compatibility, device friendliness, and application hosting all affect the total cost.

Development cost is a major factor in website pricing and is usually billed either as a package or based on working hours.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

When you search “Hotels in Nepal” on Google, millions of results appear. A website’s ranking depends on its content, title, meta tags, keywords, website age, layout, quality and relevance of content, page speed, mobile friendliness, website architecture, user experience, backlinks, and other protocols.

To perform proper SEO, the website must be coded according to search engine algorithms. This includes adding image alt tags, building backlinks, updating news and blogs regularly, and maintaining quality content. As a result, SEO increases development costs.

Add-ons

Using third-party plugins, chat scripts, analytics codes, paid applications, or APIs may increase the website cost. Paid forms and paid chat systems also contribute to additional expenses.

Graphics

Website design elements such as paid photos, banners, and custom graphics affect development costs. This includes graphic design expenses. Audio, video, animations, and applications embedded into the website also impact storage needs and cost.

Updates and Maintenance

Creating a website is not enough; it must be updated regularly. Websites built with a Content Management System (CMS) are easier to update, while non-CMS websites are harder to modify. Maintenance costs depend on the agreement between the developer and the client.

Content Writing

While building a website, detailed information about the organization, service, or product must be written. Skilled and experienced writers can present complete information effectively. Since content must align with pages and SEO standards, hiring experts increases overall development costs.

Photography

High-quality photos of products, services, and institutions improve presentation and visualization. Professional photography enhances brand image and influences website costs.

Monitoring

After development, the website must be monitored regularly. It should be protected from script issues, hacking attempts, SQL injections, DNS attacks, spam comments, and other threats. Continuous monitoring ensures the website remains online 24/7 throughout the year.

Support and Visits

Ongoing support, client visits, and regular updates also influence whether a website is considered cheap or expensive.

Server Uptime

Servers offer different uptime guarantees. Servers with 100 percent uptime are more expensive. Others may provide 90 percent to 99.99 percent uptime. Uptime refers to how long the server remains online to serve website files.

Development Framework

Websites can be built using hand coding or open-source frameworks. Today, many websites are built on platforms such as WordPress, Joomla, Magento, PrestaShop, Ghost, OpenCart, Shopify, and Drupal. The chosen framework and required functionality affect development costs.

CMS

Without a CMS, developers must modify code to update content. Only skilled developers can handle such updates. With a CMS, clients can easily update photos, posts, and news themselves. However, adding a CMS requires additional programming time, increasing costs.

Network Speed

The internet speed of the hosting server affects website performance, hits, and bandwidth. High-speed servers generally cost more.

Backup and Restore

If files crash, the website is hacked, or data is lost, backup and restore options help recover the site. Hosting companies may provide restore options for 24 hours, one week, two weeks, or even a month.

On VPS servers, snapshots can be taken manually or automatically whenever required.

Clean Code

Properly organized code ensures that websites load quickly in browsers. Poor or messy coding can cause slow performance and errors. Clean coding also makes updates easier for developers.

Layout Design

Before development, designers create sketches to decide menu placement, logo size, slider images, call-to-action buttons, and overall structure. Tools such as Photoshop, Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch are used. Planning from scratch makes it easier to decide functionality and content placement.

Domain Registration

Website domain addresses such as .com, .net, .org, .np, and .edu.np are available in hundreds of extensions. Domain pricing depends on whether it is a Top-Level Domain or Country Code Top-Level Domain.

.com domains typically cost NPR 1000 to NPR 2000 per year, although some registrars offer discounted first-year rates. Domains under .np are currently available free of cost through Mercantile Communications in Kathmandu. To register a .np domain, an organization registration certificate and application letter are required.

.com domains must be renewed annually. If not renewed on time, another person or organization may claim them. Registering a domain for up to 10 years at once can be beneficial but increases initial website costs.
