Nepal's Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal Inaugurates AI Cell

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal inaugurated the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics Cell (AI-AAC) at Nepal Police Headquarters, Naxal, amid a special program held on Monday.

On the occasion, Minister Aryal also observed the newly established cell and received detailed information about its functions, applications, and overall utility.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Home Secretary Raj Kumar Shrestha, Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki, Armed Police Force Inspector General Raju Aryal, Additional Inspectors General of Police, officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Deputy Inspectors General of Police, and other senior officials.

In the current context, rising cybercrime, misinformation and disinformation, organized criminal networks, financial crimes, and digital campaigns aimed at creating social instability have posed increasing challenges to national security, crime investigation, prevention, and control.

In this scenario, effective security management is no longer possible without the use of analytical systems based on Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), Machine Learning, Predictive Analytics, and Automation. With this perspective, the Nepal Police Headquarters has established a high-tech, strategic, and future-oriented structure — the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Analytics Cell (AI-AAC).

The main objectives of the cell include institutional adoption and strengthening of artificial intelligence; development of proactive intelligence and early warning systems; enhancement of cognitive security and control of information manipulation; strengthening cyber and digital crime intelligence; development of AI-assisted investigation and judicial-grade digital evidence systems; detection of AI misuse and development of defensive capabilities; and the development and expansion of descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and analytical systems.

Through the use of this AI Cell, Nepal Police has already taken legal action against individuals involved in five cases of misinformation and disinformation, apprehending suspects from Banke, Kanchanpur, Sunsari, Salyan, and Dang.

Central Police Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abhi Narayan Kafle, stated, “It is essential for citizens to remain aware while using social media.

Nepal Police is always active in bringing those who misuse social media to spread false and misleading information within the legal framework.” He also urged all citizens to comply with the law and uphold the identity of responsible and good citizens.
